Headaches in Hernando: Common, But Not Normal

Headaches in Hernando: Common, But Not Normal

Chiropractic Care for Headaches in Hernando MS

Nearly everyone knows what it’s like to get headaches in Hernando. In fact, they are more common than the common cold. Some headaches are mildly uncomfortable and can be treated with over-the-counter pain medication. Others are downright unbearable, no matter how much medicine you take.

It’s estimated that 2 to 4 percent of the population suffers from chronic headaches (15 or more headache days per month), a disorder that can be painful, even debilitating. Then, 18 percent of females and 6 percent of males experience migraines. Severe, frequently occurring headaches or migraines—and living in constant fear of the next one—can affect your family relationships, social life, and employment. Still, apart from headache disorders, most headaches and migraines are not dangerous, even if they are unpleasant.

This begs the question—if headaches are common and usually don’t indicate an underlying health problem, does that mean they are normal? No. Even getting one headache per week is not a normal or healthy condition.

Whether you suffer from chronic attacks or only get headaches occasionally, the trick is to understand and treat the underlying cause rather than mask symptoms with medication. Explore different types of headaches, uncover their potential causes, and find out how a chiropractor can diagnose and treat your condition.

Types of Headaches in Hernando MS

Headache pain falls into 150 different categories, but some of them are more common than others.

Common Types of Headaches

  • Tension headaches are, by far, the most common type of headache among teens and adults. They cause dull pain to develop in the forehead, at the temples, or around the entire head. No other symptoms accompany tension headaches.
  • Migraine headaches cause throbbing or pounding pain that lasts anywhere from four to 72 hours. Most people who get migraines may experience an attack one to four times per month. Other symptoms often accompany the pain, including intolerance to light and sound, nausea and vomiting, and loss of appetite.
  • Cluster headaches can cause severe burning or piercing pain around one eye lasting 15 minutes to three hours. On the side where the pain occurs, the eye reddens and waters, the eyelid droops, and the pupil constricts. The nostril on that side may also run or become stuffed up. Cluster headaches tend to occur in clusters of one to three times per day for two to 12 weeks.
  • Sinus headaches cause deep and constant pain around your cheekbones, forehead, and the bridge of your nose. Since they are linked to sinus infections, these headaches are usually accompanied by a runny nose, fever, facial swelling, and a feeling of fullness in the head.
  • Posttraumatic headaches usually occur two to three days after a head injury and may last for a few months. However, treatment is recommended if the headaches don’t dissipate within a couple of weeks. In addition to head pain, you may experience vertigo, lightheadedness, memory trouble, and difficulty concentrating.

Less Common Types of Headaches

  • Exercise headaches are caused by dilated blood vessels that increased circulation when you’re physically active. You may experience a pulsing pain on both sides of your head, lasting anywhere from five minutes to 48 hours.
  • Hemicrania continua—or “continuous one-sided headaches”—are ongoing headaches that only affect half of your head and face. They share many of the same unusual symptoms as cluster headaches, but they last for months without switching sides or disappearing even briefly.
  • Hormone headaches are caused by fluctuating hormone levels that occur around a woman’s period, pregnancy, and menopause. Changing birth control methods or undergoing hormone replacement therapy can trigger these headaches.
  • Rebound headaches, also called medication-overuse headaches, are most common in people who take pain relievers more than two or three times a week, or more than 10 days per month. When the headache medicine wears off, a dull, constant pain returns, prompting you to pop more pills to stop it.

Rare Types of Headaches

  • Ice pick headaches are known to cause short, stabbing pain that only lasts a few seconds. Intense but brief attacks may happen a few times per day. Unlike other types of head pain, ice pick headaches could indicate an underlying condition, so contact your doctor as soon as possible.
  • Spinal headaches can occur if spinal fluid leaks through the puncture site of a spinal tap, spinal block, or epidural. Thankfully, the design of spinal needles has improved over the years, so these headaches are rare.
  • Thunderclap headaches come seemingly out of nowhere, peaking quickly and causing severe pain. Take this type of headache seriously, as it could be a sign of head trauma, stroke, inflamed blood vessels, or dangerous blood pressure changes in late pregnancy.

Diagnosing and Treating Headaches

Doctors have identified numerous causes of headaches, including stress, injury, genetics, and poor posture. Consider that all of these can cause structural issues in the back, neck, and jaw. For instance:

  • Stress is linked with muscle tightness in the neck and shoulders.
  • Physical trauma can cause lasting bone and soft tissue damage.
  • Genetics may cause musculoskeletal development issues.
  • Poor posture can reduce mobility and compress or irritate the nerves.

Chiropractic care is an effective treatment option for headaches and migraines that are caused by structural issues. This technique has a long history of helping patients who have suffered for years with ongoing or recurring headache pain.
